A recent survey showed that Indians are worried about the safety of a few spices after Hong Kong and Singapore banned four products from two popular Indian brands due to finding cancer-causing ingredients. These countries pointed out the presence of ethylene oxide in Indian spice products, which raises the risk of breast cancer and lymphoma.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is investigating the matter after these bans. The survey, done by LocalCircles, found that 72% of consumers who regularly used these Indian brands were concerned about the carcinogenic ingredients.

Out of 12,361 people surveyed from 293 districts, 62% said they used these brands’ spices. Only 10% said they didn’t use them. Some are worried about other brands having similar issues.

The survey also revealed no trust in FSSAI and state food regulators’ ability to ensure food safety. On the other hand, the FSSAI mentioned that they regularly check products and take legal action if they find any violations.
