India General Elections 2024: Supreme Court Rules

On April 26, the Supreme Court rejected requests to cross-verify votes cast on electronic voting machines (EVMs) with the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). Instead, the court suggested using electronic machines for vote counting and including bar codes on voting slips.

The court stated that requests for verifying the microcontroller of EVMs can be made within 7 days of the poll result declaration by paying fees. If tampering is found during verification, candidates’ fees will be refunded.

The order follows India’s ongoing Lok Sabha elections since April 19, with votes to be counted on June 4. The court directed sealing the symbol loading unit after symbol loading and storing it for 45 days. It allowed checking burnt memory in EVM microcontrollers upon candidates’ requests within 7 days of results, with expenses borne by requesting candidates and refunded if tampering is confirmed.

Previously, the court dismissed pleas to revert to paper ballots due to India’s size and population. Concerns over VVPAT reliability, including printer malfunctions, paper jams, and electronic-paper record discrepancies, have been raised. The Supreme Court had earlier directed increased VVPAT physical verification in Lok Sabha constituencies.

Vijay Deverakonda and director Parasuram’s recent film, Family Star, disappointed both in content and commercial success.

The duo’s previous collaboration, Geetha Govindam, was a massive success, raising high expectations for Family Star, which ultimately failed after its theatrical release with so much hype around it.

The film is now streaming on Prime Video in Telugu and Tamil with English subtitles, just three weeks after its theatrical release. Due to its poor performance at the box office, the makers opted for an early OTT release in the same month of its release in theaters.

Starring Mrunal Thakur opposite Vijay, Family Star also features Jagapathi Babu, Vasuki, Abhinaya, Divyansha Kaushik, and Vennela Kishore in important roles. Dil Raju produced the film under Sri Venkateswara Creations, with Gopi Sundar composing the music.

On April 22, the huge plane left Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport at about 3:20 a.m. local time. It landed at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport over 14 hours later, around 10 a.m. ET. This is the first time in four years that Etihad’s quadjet fleet has flown this route. It’s a big deal because it’s getting back into the US market after a break. The A380 also flies between Abu Dhabi and London.

Etihad says the A380 will increase the number of people flying between these cities because it will take over one of the two flights currently going between New York and JFK. The second flight uses a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Etihad’s Chief Revenue Officer, Arik De, said in December that their flights to North America were doing really well. They added a second daily flight to JFK last year.

The A380’s special feature is The Residence, a super fancy first-class suite that costs a lot. It’s like a small apartment for two people on the plane’s second level. Other airlines, like Singapore Airlines, have nice first-class cabins too, but Etihad’s is extra luxurious.

In December, a flight from New York to Abu Dhabi in Etihad’s first-class apartments cost around $9,000 to $10,000 each way. Adding the residence cost another $3,000 each way, totaling about $24,000 for a round trip.

Many people were excited about The Residence coming back to New York. It quickly filled up for May flights after the announcement. The living room in The Residence has a sliding door for privacy. It’s made for two people. A special cabin crew takes care of the residence passengers. They set the table, serve food, and get the space ready for sleeping. Etihad won’t have a butler for The Residence anymore, according to an aviation journalist.

Certain employers will see a reduction in how many foreign workers they can hire. For some low-wage jobs, the cap is now 20%, down from 30%. This doesn’t apply to construction and healthcare.

Foreign workers will have less time to apply for permits starting May 1, 2024. Employers must also consider other options, like hiring asylum seekers with work permits. Employers now must check and adjust wages for foreign workers annually. This ensures they get fair pay according to local wage rates.

Canada aims to rely less on foreign workers, prioritizing Canadian hires. The Temporary Foreign Worker Program fills temporary job gaps when local workers aren’t available.
