U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that the US is closely monitoring the rise in human rights abuses in India. “We are monitoring the rise in human rights abuses by some Police, government, and prison officials,” Blinken said recently during a joint press briefing with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

However, Jaishankar and Rajnath Singh didn’t speak about the human rights issue during the same briefing. US Representative Ilhan Omar has warned recently that the Modi government is “criminalizing the act of being Muslim in India.” She questioned the reluctance of the US government to criticize Modi’s government. Omar was a part of Joe Biden’s democratic party.

So, Blinken’s remarks on human rights abuses in India have garnered importance.
