Former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot in the chest while he was making the election speech. The media there reported that a man from behind fired with a shotgun. Shinzo Abe after the shot was initially conscious and responsive. He then appeared to be in a state of cardiac arrest. He was immediately taken to a hospital.

A 41-year-old man who was suspected of carrying a gun was taken into custody. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno responded to the situation.
