Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has been sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India. The oath ceremony happened a day after the retirement of Justice NV Ramana.

However, UU Lalit’s tenure as CJI will last for only 74 days as he will reach the age of 65 by November 8 this year. As per the rules, Supreme Court Justice will retire by reaching 65. President of India Droupadi Murmu administered the sworn-in ceremony of the Chief Justice held at Rashtrapathi Bhavan in New Delhi.

He becomes the second CJI who was directly elevated to the Supreme Court bench from the Bar after Justice SM Sikri in 1971.
