U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) today stated that a magnitude of 7.1 earthquake has hit the Kermadec Islands of New Zealand which are uninhabited islands. The quake was estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), the USGS added. A Tsunami warning has been issued by the  U.S. Tsunami Warning System.

However, a while back, the National Emergency Management Agency of New Zealand stated that there is no Tsunami threat. “There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the M7.0 earthquake in the Southern Kermadec Islands. Remember, if an earthquake is long or strong, get gone,” the agency tweeted.

This is not the first time that New Zealand faced this as the nation is prone to earthquakes. It is located on the boundary of two of the world’s major tectonic plates – the Pacific Plate and the Australian Plate. Every year, thousands of earthquakes rock NZ.
