Supreme Court has given a huge relief to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as the apex court has stayed his conviction in the Modi Surname remarks case. This decision will restore his status as a Member of Parliament and will also allow him to contest the next year’s elections. The bench headed by BR Gavai stated that “No reason has been given by the trial judge for imposing maximum sentence, the order of conviction needs to be stayed pending final adjudication.”

Purnesh Modi, a former Minister of Gujarat had filed a defamation case in the year 2019 against Rahul Gandhi over his remarks, “How come all the thieves have Modi as the surname?” Gandhi made these remarks during a rally at Kolar on April 13, 2019.

During the hearing, Justice BR Gavai expressed concerns about the representation of the Wayanad Constituency due to Gandhi’s conviction. In an affidavit submitted to the apex court Rahul Gandhi once again refused to apologize for his remarks.
