It is a historic day for India as a tribal woman for the first time became the President of India. Draupadi Murmu from Odisha takes oath as the 15th President of India.

After assuming the highest constitutional post of India Murmu said that her becoming the President is not a personal feat but the achievement of every poor in the nation. “My nomination is proof that the poor in India can not only dream but can fulfill it.”

The new President further said that “Your trust and support will be a major strength for me to carry out this new responsibility.” Murmu earlier in the morning paid tributes to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Her speech received thunderous applause including the outgoing President Ramnath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The outgoing President then escorted Madam President to the Presidential study for a brief meeting. Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana administered the oath of office to Murmu in the Central Hall of Parliament.
