Yakub Patel who hails from Gujarat has taken charge as the new mayor of Preston City in Lancashire County in Northern England. Yakub Patel was born in the Bharuch district of Gujarat. He completed his graduation from Baroda University in 1976 and went to the UK.

In 1995, he was first elected as a councilor from the Labor Party for Avenham Ward in Preston City. It is the first time in the history of the Preston City Council that a Muslim councilor has been appointed. Currently, he has officially taken over as the mayor for the year 2023-24. Patel has a special connection with Preston City. He worked at Preston Corporation since 1979.

He served as Revenue Inspector, Traffic Inspector, Assistant Chief, Chief Inspector, and Operations Manager at Corporation before retiring in July 2009. He is currently working as a co-opted member of Preston Jamia Masjid, Preston Muslim Burial Society.
