AAP’s Shelly Oberoi becomes New Delhi Mayor; beats BJP candidate by 34 votes

The Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate Shelly Oberoi becomes the New Delhi Mayor. The elections happened in an intense environment where Shelly Oberoi beat BJP candidate Rekha Gupta by 34 votes. Out of the 266 polled in the election held, Shelly Oberoi received 150 votes while Rekha Gupta got confined to 116 votes. A total of 10 nominated MPs, 14 nominated MLAs, and 241 elected councilors out of 250 voted in the mayoral election.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia congratulated the new Mayor. Following the tussle between AAP and BJP, the Mayor elections were postponed thrice and finally happened after Supreme Court’s order.

After the result, Manish Sisodia tweeted, “The goons lost, the public won. Many congratulations to all the workers on becoming the Mayor of Aam Aadmi Party in Municipal Corporation of Delhi and once again whole hearted gratitude to the people of Delhi. Many many congratulations to the first Mayor @OberoiShelly of AAP.”
