India is expected to experience severe heat wave conditions next week, making 2024 likely to be the hottest year recorded. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for parts of West Bengal and Odisha until the month’s end, with orange alerts in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, and interior Karnataka.

The weather department warns of “heatwave to severe heatwave” conditions persisting over eastern and southern India for the next five days. Temperatures are expected to rise by 2-3°C in East India in two days and in Maharashtra and parts of southern India in the next five days.

Rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is forecasted for the western Himalayan region from April 26–29 and over northwest and central India from April 26–28.

The World Meteorological Organization confirmed 2023 as the hottest year on record globally, with temperatures 1.45°C above pre-industrial levels. Both the IMD and WMO anticipate 2024 to surpass previous records, with increasing temperatures leading to severe heatwaves, particularly in North and Central India.
