A major change has been made to the passport application process that came into effect from August 5th. As per the new rules, whoever applies for a new passport will have to use Digilocker to upload the required documents.

Digilocker is a digital wallet service introduced by the Indian government where users can access their important documents like driver’s licenses, mark sheets, vehicle registrations, etc,  As per the new rules, only after uploading the Citizen Digilocker documents, the person would be able to complete the passport application process by visiting www.passportindia.gov.in.

The accuracy and authenticity of the documents will be ensured through Digilocker. The decision was made to eradicate the deficiencies found during the physical document verification at the PSKs. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that if an applicant uploads his documents on Digilocker, then there is no need for him/her to bring in the original physical documents during the application process.
