Visakhapatnam: In a significant boost to Tripura’s trade and connectivity, Union Minister for Shipping, Ports, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced that the state would soon be linked to key Indian ports through waterways via Bangladesh. Speaking in Agartala, he emphasized the Centre’s commitment to strengthening trade routes for the landlocked state.

The project includes the construction of jetties along the Gomati River, enabling a direct connection to the Bay of Bengal. This initiative will facilitate seamless trade between Tripura and major ports like Kolkata, Paradip, and Visakhapatnam, significantly reducing transportation costs and time compared to existing road and rail networks through Assam and West Bengal.

“Tripura is a highly fertile state with vast agricultural potential. Improved waterways will enhance trade capabilities and unlock new international market opportunities,” Sonowal stated. He also praised the Union Budget’s focus on development, highlighting its benefits for farmers, youth, and the middle class.

Apart from trade, the minister stressed the government’s plans to develop Tripura’s tourism sector, including river cruises and water sports at Dumboor Lake, aiming to transform the state into a major tourist destination.
