Heavy rain lashed Delhi on July 31 evening, causing several houses to collapse and trapping one person in Chandni Chowk’s Sadar Bazar. The intense rainfall led to major disruptions, including the diversion of at least 10 flights, with one flight from Tokyo redirected to Jaipur. Vehicles were stranded on waterlogged roads, reminiscent of the recent flooding at a coaching center in Rajinder Nagar that resulted in three student fatalities.
Delhi schools closed
Delhi’s Education Minister, Atishi, announced that all schools, both government and private, will remain closed on August 1 due to the severe weather conditions.
The Delhi Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, has instructed officers to remain vigilant and address waterlogging issues, particularly in areas prone to flooding, such as coaching centers.
The India Meteorological Office forecast continued heavy rainfall, with isolated, intense spells expected. Areas like Connaught Place, ITO junction, and Minto Road experienced severe waterlogging and traffic jams, while several underpasses and roads were shut down due to flooding in Delhi.
The rain has caused major disruptions in Delhi, with airlines advising passengers to check flight statuses and prepare for potential delays. Mayur Vihar recorded 119 mm of rain, while Noida saw 118 mm.
