New Delhi: The Indian government revealed that it spent Rs 95,344 to prepare the draft report for the ambitious “One Nation, One Election” initiative. This information was disclosed by the Ministry of Law in response to a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by national media.
A high-level committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, was formed on September 2, 2023, to assess the feasibility and framework for simultaneous elections. The committee worked diligently for 194 days and submitted its findings on March 14, 2024.

The report focuses on the social, economic, and political implications of implementing “One Nation, One Election.” Proponents of the initiative argue that it can streamline governance and reduce election-related expenses, while critics highlight the challenges of synchronizing elections across India’s diverse political landscape.
The insights from this report are expected to play a crucial role in shaping future policies and debates around simultaneous elections, which aim to conduct Lok Sabha and state assembly polls together.
