Mumbai: While Bollywood actors have often paid cinematic tributes to the Indian Army, veteran actor Nana Patekar stands apart as someone who went beyond the reel to contribute in real life. On Kargil Vijay Diwas 2024, Nana Patekar’s inspiring role during the 1999 Kargil War came to light.
Nana Patekar, a celebrated star of films like Tirangaa, Welcome, and Krantiveer, served alongside the Indian Army as a member of the Quick Reaction Team (QRT). QRTs are elite military units trained to respond swiftly to emergencies, providing vital support such as security and reconnaissance.

Reflecting on his role, Nana Patekar once shared, “Itna sa toh kuch hum kar sakte hai desh ke liye (At least we can do this for the country).” His dedication extended to spending two weeks with soldiers in the Maratha Light Infantry regiment during the war.
Notably, Nana Patekar’s military connection began in 1990 when he earned the honorary rank of Captain in the Indian Territorial Army after rigorous training for his directorial Prahaar. In the film, he portrayed Major Pratap Chauhan, collaborating with prominent Army personnel, including General VK Singh.
Nana Patekar’s real-life patriotism is a testament to his unwavering commitment to the nation, both on and off-screen.
