Visakhapatnam: Residents of Visakhapatnam, under the leadership of various residential colony associations, have intensified their advocacy for critical infrastructure projects to tackle growing traffic congestion. On March 13, 2025, the Visakhapatnam Apartment Residents Welfare Association (VARWA), led by General Secretary B.B. Ganesh, staged a dharna at Hanumanthawaka Junction, demanding immediate action.
Key Demands
Flyover from Hanumanthawaka to Maddilapalem – To streamline traffic flow, independent of the metro rail project to prevent delays.
Subway at Maddilapalem Junction – To enhance pedestrian and vehicular movement.
Additional Infrastructure – Construction of footpaths, service roads, designated parking, and proper marking of speed breakers for road safety.
Why the Demand?
With Visakhapatnam’s population exceeding 2 million, the city has become a key hub for tourism, education, healthcare, and business. Increased commuter traffic from North Andhra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh has led to severe congestion at critical points like Hanumanthawaka and Maddilapalem.
Further, the upcoming international airport at Bhogapuram is expected to worsen traffic conditions, making infrastructure expansion urgent.
Community Mobilization
The protest saw active participation from VARWA and the Federation of Colony Associations (NIVAS), with leaders like B.B. Ganesh and N. Prakash Rao rallying support. The residents urge the government to act swiftly to prevent worsening commuter hardships and ensure sustainable urban development.
