Scientists have recently announced that a woman who belongs to a mixed-race has been cured of HIV. The scientists have reportedly used a novel treatment by using the transplant method. It involves umbilical cord blood, which opens the possibility of curing more people belonging to diversified racial backgrounds.

It is the first case that a woman is cured of HIV and third instance so far, the past two cases are of men. This particular woman also had Leukemia has received cord blood to treat her cancer. Researchers have presented some of the details of the new case.

The cord blood has been received from a partially matched donor. It is different from the typical practice of finding a bone marrow donor of similar race and ethnicity to the patients. To give the patient temporary immune defenses while the transplant took place she has received blood from a close relative of hers.
