Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has supported the IPL governing council’s decision to introduce the uncapped player rule for the 2025 season, which is rumored to benefit MS Dhoni.

According to the new rule, any Indian player who hasn’t played in the national team’s playing XI (Test, ODI, T20) for the past five years or doesn’t have a BCCI central contract will be considered an uncapped player. This rule only applies to Indian players, and it is believed that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may retain MS Dhoni under this rule.

Dinesh Karthik mentioned, “The uncapped player rule seems to have been made for one person (referring to Dhoni). IPL has greatly benefited from him, and he continues to be a major draw for audiences.” He also added that no franchise would oppose this rule as Dhoni is a special player.

The IPL governing council has allowed teams to retain six players, with one Right to Match (RTM) option.
