Karachi: New Zealand started their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a convincing 66-run win over Pakistan in the opening match at the National Stadium, Karachi. A stellar batting display by Will Young (107) and Tom Latham (118)*, followed by a disciplined bowling performance, sealed the victory for the visitors.

After winning the toss, Pakistan opted to bowl first and had New Zealand at 73/3 at one stage. However, a 118-run stand between Young and Latham helped the Kiwis recover, with Glenn Phillips’ quick 61 pushing the total to 321/5 in 50 overs.
Pakistan’s chase faltered early as Saud Shakeel (6) and Mohammad Rizwan (3) fell cheaply. Despite Babar Azam’s 64 off 90 balls and a late fightback from Khushdil Shah (69), Pakistan couldn’t keep up with the required run rate. Mitchell Santner (3/48) and William O’Rourke (3/51) led New Zealand’s bowling attack, ensuring Pakistan were bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs.
New Zealand’s dominant win puts Pakistan under pressure as they prepare for their next high-stakes encounter against India.
