Ponniyin Selvan movie review – strictly average

Maniratnam’s dream project Ponniyin Selvan was released today. The top stars of Tamil Cinema Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, and others played key roles in the movie. Let us check out the review.

Story:
Aditya Karikalan (Vikram) comes to know about the conspiracy to kill the Chola heir. He gives Vallavaraya (Karthi) the mission to crack the sinister plan. Who plans this conspiracy and Did Vallavaraya is successful in his mission forms the first part of Ponniyin Selvan.
Performances:
Though Vikram who played Aditya Karikalan is the protagonist of the movie, he will be seen intermittently in the movie. However, his screen presence is felt. He has intensity and ease.
Karthi who played Vallavaraya has a strong role in the first part. Karthi has this comedy tinge in him and that makes him the perfect choice for this role. He does it with ease. His body language is superb. Aishwarya Rai is elegant as the queen.
Trisha has got a relatively lesser role but she managed to make her screen presence felt. Jayam Ravi is okay in his role as the heir. He did well in the action parts.
There are a lot of prominent actors in the movie including Jayaram and Prakash Raj. All of them did a perfect job of portraying their roles.
Technicalities:
Technically, PS-1 is superb. AR Rahman’s music may not have worked in comparison with the expectations but he does an excellent job with BGM. Ravi Varman’s cinematography worm is natural. The editing is alright, the VFX department did well. The dubbing could have been a bit better.
Mani Ratnam smoothly translates the novel into a movie story. However, his execution is what bothered the audience. The story is fine, and the screenplay is alright as well but the sequences miss the wow factor. It is alright work from Mani Ratnam.
Finally:
Ponniyin Selvan like the name is based on Tamil culture. The Telugu audiences might feel a bit it of the world. But again, PS-1 is a visual grandeur with a lot of span for the filmmaker to explore. As said, the movie misses the wow factor and ends up as a strictly average film.
