Amaravati: Confusion surrounds the possibility of conducting the SSC (10th grade) public exams in the Telugu medium for students in Andhra Pradesh government schools.
With no official clarity on whether exams will be held in Telugu, students and headmasters are left uncertain. The Department of School Education is expected to clarify its stance on the matter soon.
In December 2021, the YSRCP government directed a shift towards a ‘single medium of instruction’ across schools in Andhra Pradesh, initiating a gradual phase-out of Telugu-medium classes in favor of English. This followed an earlier 2020 directive to shift grades 1-6 to English medium, although a High Court ruling had later overturned that Andhra Pradesh government order, leading the state to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court. As there was no stay from the Supreme Court, the state issued further instructions for a single medium in schools, though it stopped short of explicitly defining that medium as English.
In the interim, many schools unofficially continued offering both English and Telugu, aligning staffing and teaching resources to accommodate both mediums based on local needs. As these students now prepare for their SSC exams, headmasters have urged the government to allow examinations in Telugu as well.
With officials questioning the implementation of both media in some schools, headmasters and educators are hoping for clear guidance to resolve the ambiguity over the medium of instruction and examination for the upcoming public exams.
