Unlike other metro projects, Visakhapatnam lacked a UMTA until now. The newly formed authority, headed by the Chief Secretary of the Municipal Administration Department and convened by the VMRDA Commissioner, includes key officials from finance, transport, metro rail, and local governance bodies.

The Visakhapatnam Metro Rail project’s first phase will span 46.23 km across three corridors, featuring 42 stations at an estimated cost of Rs 11,498 crore.

  • Corridor 1: Steel Plant to Kommadi Junction (34.4 km)
  • Corridor 2: Gurudwara to Old Post Office (5.07 km)
  • Corridor 3: Thatichetlapalem to Chinawaltheru (6.75 km)

With the land acquisition process set to begin, a special district team will oversee the groundwork. The UMTA formation is expected to streamline coordination between state and central agencies, expediting project execution.
