Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been convicted by Surat Court in Gujarat in a criminal defamation case against him over his alleged Modi surname remark. He has been sentenced to 2 years in jail. In a political campaign in Karol, Rahul Gandhi made these “All these have Modi surname” remarks and a defamation case was filed against him in 2019.

“Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi. All the thieves have ‘Modi’ as a surname?” said Rahul Gandhi in his political speech. A person named Purnesh Modi filed a petition in the court stating that his remarks defamed all the persons with the ‘Modi’ surname. The court convicted Rahul Gandhi under section IPC 504 which means maximum imprisonment of up to two years.

However, Rahul Gandhi was granted bail by the trial court and the sentence would remain suspended for the time being to allow him to file an appeal.
