Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan today dismissed the possibility of granting opposition party status to the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), stating that it was not eligible under assembly rules.

Speaking to the media after Governor S. Abdul Nazeer’s address, Pawan Kalyan responded to YSRCP’s protest demanding Leader of the Opposition status for YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. He asserted that opposition status is granted based on numbers, not demands, adding that the Jana Sena Party (JSP), with 21 seats, is the second-largest party in the 175-member Assembly, while YSRCP won only 11 seats.
Advising YSRCP to function with dignity, Pawan Kalyan urged them to raise public issues rather than stall Assembly proceedings. He criticized YSRCP’s protest during the Governor’s speech, calling it an example of declining political standards.
On YSRCP’s claim of securing 40% vote share, he dismissed it, stating that only seat count determines opposition status. Jagan Mohan Reddy and YSRCP legislators later staged a walkout in protest.
