16 Jawans including three Junior Commissioned Officers and 13 soldiers of the Indian National Army were killed after the truck carrying them falls into a gorge while taking a sharp turn in Sikkim. The unfortunate accident took place at Zema in North Sikkim. The three-vehicle convoy was traveling from Chatten in the morning toward Thangu.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his condolences to the deceased in the accident. “Deeply pained by the loss of lives of the Indian Army personnel due to a road accident in North Sikkim. The nation is deeply grateful for their service and commitment. My condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of those who are injured,” tweeted Rajnath Singh.

The four injured in the accident were air evacuated, the Army statement reads.
