New Zealand is considering a law to allow 16-year-olds to vote. The Supreme Court has ruled out that the current voting age of 18 is discriminatory. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has promised to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 and bring a law to the Parliament. The media reports state that the apex court in the nation has termed the current voting age breached the human rights of young people.

The Prime Minister is positive about the change but for the bill to pass in the Parliament at least 75 percent of the MPs should support the bill. Jacinda Ardern said, “I personally support lowering the voting age but it is not me or the government. At least 75 percent of MPs should support this.”

The Supreme Court stated that younger people should be allowed to vote on the issues like climate crisis which is going to be crucial in their future.
