The Andhra Pradesh state government recently faced criticism for not delivering pension benefits to elderly and disabled citizens. They had sought court permission to release the funds earlier but were directed to do so after the assembly elections. However, they missed the deadline, sparking controversy.
Opposition leader and Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu accused the government of possibly diverting funds meant for pensions to pay off favored contractors instead. He claimed that around Rs 8,000 crore were redirected, and new loans and bonds were allegedly misused for unauthorized payments.
Chandrababu urged the Governor to ensure proper fund allocation as per rules, especially during the election period. He also requested that the Chief Secretary halt payments to specific contractors until financial commitments are met.
The opposition’s concern is that essential funds are being mismanaged, affecting public welfare schemes. They’ve sought intervention to prioritize genuine beneficiaries over potentially improper payments to contractors.
