Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has launched a lake rejuvenation project to restore six key lakes across the city. The targeted lakes include Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula (Shivrampally, Old City), Thammidi Kunta (Madhapur), Sunnam Cheruvu (Guttala Begumpet, Madhapur), Nalla Cheruvu (Kukatpally), and Nalla/Pedda Cheruvu (Uppal).

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is funding the project, with work already underway. According to HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath, the first phase involves dewatering and desilting, followed by excavation work to restore the natural ecosystem of these lakes. The project is expected to be completed by June 2025, with detailed project reports (DPRs) prepared and tenders soon to be issued.

A 3D development model has also been designed for Nalla Cheruvu in Uppal, showcasing its transformation post-restoration. The initiative aims to improve groundwater levels, reduce urban flooding, and enhance environmental sustainability.

HYDRAA has urged the public to support the project and dismiss any misinformation regarding its execution, assuring that all work is being conducted transparently for the long-term preservation of Hyderabad’s water resources.
