Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s Swachh Survekshan 2024 ranking is under threat due to the presence of over 1,500 Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) across the city. The Swachh Survekshan, conducted under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U), evaluates cities based on cleanliness, with cities free of GVPs earning 100 crucial points.
To tackle this issue, GHMC plans to install 800 smart bins in chronic garbage-dumping locations. These sensor-equipped bins will alert a centralized control room when nearing capacity, ensuring timely waste collection. This initiative aims to replace dumper bins removed in 2016 and curb waste accumulation.
Despite GHMC securing the 9th rank in the 2023 Swachh Survekshan and receiving a 5-star Garbage Free Cities Protocol rating, the persistent issue of illegal waste dumping continues to pose a challenge. While door-to-door garbage collection via Swachh Auto Trolleys (SATs) was introduced, many residents evade the user fee, dumping waste on roads instead.
GHMC’s smart bin strategy is expected to improve Hyderabad’s cleanliness and boost its Swachh Survekshan 2024 ranking, making the city cleaner and more sustainable.
