Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has ramped up efforts to repair damaged roads and improve water safety measures across Vizag city.
Of the 4,441 potholes identified, around 2,100 have been filled at an estimated cost of Rs 6.9 crore, with ongoing work to address the remaining. This initiative is part of the state’s 100-day action plan directed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, aiming to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduce inconvenience for drivers.

In tandem with road repairs, GVMC has undertaken a critical operation to relocate water pipelines that intersect with city drains to prevent contamination of drinking water. GVMC identified 398 such intersections, with 375 pipelines successfully diverted to curb the risk of waterborne diseases, particularly Diarrhea, which has been a concern across the state in recent months.
GVMC Commissioner Dr. P. Sampath Kumar highlighted that the 300 million liters per day (MLD) of water supplied to residents is thoroughly purified. Over 2,500 chlorine tests are conducted daily across various points, including individual taps and reservoirs.
The commissioner announced plans for mobile testing units for on-the-spot water quality checks, adding that 25-30 pipeline leaks are identified and repaired daily. This comprehensive approach aims to maintain safe, clean water for Visakhapatnam’s residents.
