Washington, D.C.: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s meeting with former US President Donald Trump ended abruptly after Trump suggested that Ukraine’s commitment to peace was conditional on US involvement. Zelenskyy’s departure also meant that a planned minerals deal between the two nations went unsigned.
Trump’s social media post stated, “I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations.” Zelenskyy had been scheduled to sign the minerals deal after a joint lunch, but his armored SUV pulled up to the White House moments after Trump’s statement, signaling the abrupt end of talks.
The tense meeting, which included Vice President JD Vance’s interjections, left Ukraine without a clear commitment from the US. However, Zelenskyy gained strong support from European leaders, with Ukrainian officials praising his leadership. Vice Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba and regional heads reaffirmed their confidence in Zelenskyy, calling him “unshakable” in Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty.
While Trump’s stance raises uncertainty over future US aid, Zelenskyy’s support within Ukraine and Europe remains firm.
