Pakistan: Imran Khan got bail in the ongoing case in Lahore High Court

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and head of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has got bail from Lahore High Court. Imran Khan’s lawyer had told the court that ‘if he is given 15 days, he will try to appear in all the cases’.

The development on Friday came after days of a tense standoff between Khan’s supporters and security forces outside his residence in Lahore, which had escalated into clashes as the officers tried to arrest him on a separate court order.

Accompanied by a large number of supporters, Khan on Friday arrived in the Lahore court to seek protective bail in the cases that were filed in Lahore and Islamabad in the aftermath of the confrontations. Accusations included rioting, attempt to murder, abetment of violence and criminal conspiracy under the country’s anti-terrorism law, among others.

Imran Khan told the court, “My election campaign has been affected. No other leader was treated like this before.”

Justice Tariq Salim told Imran Khan that he has handled the case wrongly. However, after this the court granted him bail till 28 March.

Earlier, the Islamabad High Court has asked the police not to arrest Imran Khan before he appears in the court. The court had said that Imran Khan should be allowed to appear in the court.

The court gave this decision after Imran Khan’s lawyers gave an affidavit in which it was promised that their clients would appear in the court on Saturday.
