Pune: Pune is currently grappling with an alarming rise in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases, with over 111 confirmed infections and one suspected fatality in Solapur. At least 17 of the patients are on ventilators, with seven already discharged. Health authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of this rare neurological condition.

Experts are attributing the surge in GBS cases to gastroenteritis, which is often caused by contaminated food and water. Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat from AIIMS Delhi stressed the importance of food safety, advising people to avoid eating out and ensuring proper handling of food items like paneer, cheese, and rice. These foods are particularly vulnerable to bacterial contamination if not stored or prepared correctly. To strengthen immunity, she recommended incorporating vitamin C-rich foods into the diet.
GBS is a neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks its own nerves, often triggered by infections such as gastroenteritis, respiratory illnesses, or even COVID-19. Symptoms typically begin with tingling in the hands and feet, progressing to muscle weakness, and, in severe cases, paralysis. Dr. Sehrawat reassured the public that, though serious, GBS is treatable if caught early, with most patients recovering within two weeks.
