A US trade court has blocked former President Donald Trump’s proposed ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs, ruling that he exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The Manhattan-based Court of International Trade said only Congress has the constitutional power to regulate international commerce, and the President cannot bypass this through emergency powers.

The Trump administration argued the tariffs were key to trade talks and even linked them to a claimed India-Pakistan ceasefire. However, the court dismissed those arguments, saying IEEPA does not allow unlimited tariff powers. Trump’s team has filed an appeal following the ruling.
