The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a case on April 16 concerning the Telangana government’s decision to clear a significant tree cover adjacent to the University of Hyderabad (UoH). The court has previously expressed concern over the large-scale tree felling in the Kancha Gachibowli area, questioning the urgency and necessity of such actions. The Telangana High Court had also deferred hearing the case, acknowledging that the Supreme Court is already addressing the issue.
Environmental activists and UoH students have raised alarms about the potential ecological impact, highlighting the area’s rich biodiversity, including over 734 plant species and 220 bird species. They argue that the land serves as a crucial green lung for the city, and its development could lead to irreversible environmental damage.
