With smartphone usage skyrocketing, mobile phones have become an indispensable part of daily life. However, along with their widespread adoption, there’s been a rise in smartphone-related accidents, including dangerous incidents of phone explosions. Many cases involve phones placed too close to kitchen gas stoves, especially when users are distracted.
A woman was working near her gas stove when her Android phone exploded, causing alarm. As she used the sink, the phone suddenly exploded, causing alarm. These cases are becoming more common, with women often inadvertently placing their phones near stoves during cooking or conversations, which increases the risk of battery overheating.

Experts identify the lithium-ion batteries in smartphones as the primary cause behind such explosions. Lithium-ion batteries, widely used by smartphone manufacturers, contain a positive ion cathode and a negative ion anode separated by a carbon-based electrolyte. When these ions come into contact due to a battery malfunction or extreme heat, a chemical reaction may lead to an explosion.
Safety professionals advise users to keep phones away from high temperatures and avoid placing them near stoves or in excessively warm environments. Awareness and careful handling of smartphones, especially in kitchens, can significantly reduce such risks, protecting users from potential harm.
