
A massive, hexagon-shaped storm at Saturn’s north pole continues to puzzle scientists decades after its discovery. First spotted by NASA’s Voyager spacecraft in the 1980s and later studied in detail by Cassini, the storm stretches about 20,000 miles across—more than twice the size of Earth.
What makes it unique isn’t just its size, but its perfect six-sided shape, which has remained stable for over 40 years. Scientists believe it’s caused by high-speed jet streams creating a standing wave pattern in the atmosphere, but the storm’s symmetry and persistence remain a mystery.
Researchers are still analyzing Cassini data and using simulations to better understand the storm, hoping future missions will finally crack the code behind one of Saturn’s strangest features.
