An Indian-origin man, Kishore Dattapuram, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison by a U.S. court for his role in a large-scale H-1B visa fraud scheme. Dattapuram, 55, co-founded Nanosemantics, a staffing firm that supplied tech workers to companies in California’s Bay Area. He pleaded guilty in November 2024 to submitting fraudulent H-1B applications that falsely claimed employment opportunities for foreign workers. The scheme allowed the firm to unfairly obtain visas before jobs were actually available, giving it an edge over competitors. In addition to prison time, Dattapuram will serve three years of supervised release. The case highlights increased scrutiny on visa-related practices in the U.S. tech industry.
