In the aftermath of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, the Indian government has made a bold decision to revoke the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. Following a high-level security meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi, Foreign Secretary Misri confirmed that India would suspend the 1960 water-sharing agreement due to Pakistan’s continued support for cross-border terrorism. The decision to shut down the Atari Integrated Check Post was also announced, with immediate effect.

As part of the crackdown, Pakistan nationals will no longer be allowed to travel to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES), further tightening border controls. Additionally, individuals who crossed the border with valid permits must return through the same route by May 1, 2025. This decisive action underscores India’s stance on countering terrorism and the country’s commitment to safeguarding national security.
