Hyderabad: As the year concludes, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), established in July 2024, has emerged as a transformative force in the city’s urban development.

In just five months, HYDRAA has reclaimed nearly 200 acres of land, resolved over 5,000 complaints, and taken significant steps to protect Hyderabad’s dwindling water bodies. Out of an estimated 9,000 lakes from the Nizam’s era, only 185 remain notified, with 20 already dried up.

The agency’s efforts have created ripples in Hyderabad’s real estate market, compelling buyers to demand clarity on FTL (Full Tank Level) zones and buffer areas. Real estate developers have adjusted their strategies, showcasing compliance with HYDRAA regulations. Despite these concerns, Hyderabad’s residential and commercial real estate sectors reported robust activity, with June alone seeing Rs 4,288 crore in residential sales.

Lake rejuvenation has been a cornerstone of HYDRAA’s mission. Plans are underway to restore 12 lakes, with support from CSR funds. While demolitions have been contentious, HYDRAA assured that pre-July 2024 structures would not be targeted unless they are commercial ventures built without permits.

Looking ahead, HYDRAA plans to deploy advanced technology like drones and remote sensing for better mapping and encroachment monitoring, with a vision of ensuring sustainable urban development in 2025.
