Hyderabad: In the upcoming MLC elections, voting will be conducted using ballot papers, as there will be no party symbols or electronic voting machines (EVMs). The ballot paper will contain the candidate’s name and photograph for identification.
Voting Process:
- Voters must use the pen provided by election officials to mark their choice.
- To vote, write 1 in the box next to your most preferred candidate’s name.
- You can continue ranking other candidates in order of preference by marking 2, 3, 4, and so on. However, marking multiple candidates with the same number will invalidate your vote.
- It is not mandatory to mark preferences for all candidates. If you choose, you can vote for just one.
- Only numerical digits (1, 2, 3, 4) should be used; writing letters or symbols will result in an invalid vote.
Counting Process:
- Ballots from all polling stations are mixed together before counting to ensure secrecy.
- A candidate must secure 50% + 1 of the valid first-preference votes to win.
- If no candidate meets this threshold, the one with the least first-preference votes is eliminated, and their second-preference votes are transferred to other candidates.
- This elimination and transfer process continues until a candidate secures 50% + 1 votes or only one remains.
Important Tips for Voters:
- Carry a valid identity card issued by the Election Commission.
- Voting for multiple candidates does not harm your first-choice candidate’s chances.
- To make your vote count, follow the rules carefully and use the correct numerical markings.
