Telangana is gearing up for assembly elections on November 30th and Andhra Pradesh will see elections early next year. Security deposit loss is the terminology that we hear during election time. But what exactly does it mean?

During the filing of nominations, each candidate who wishes to contest as an MLA in the assembly elections has to pay an amount as a security deposit. It will be Rs. 10,000 for General and OBC candidates and Rs. 5,000 for SC and ST candidates.

For those who secure at least 1/6th of the votes (16.66 percent), their security deposits will be returned by the Election Commission. Those who fail to breach the mark, will not given back the amount. So, those who have failed to get even 1/6th of the vote share are said to have lost the security deposit.

For Example, the BJP has lost security deposit in all the contested seats in AP in the 2019 elections.
