Located at the heart of Vijayawada, near the sacred Indrakeeladri Hill, the Chittinagar Tunnel is a lifeline for thousands of daily commuters. Despite its significance, few know the story behind its construction.
Before the Chittinagar Tunnel’s existence, travelers heading from Gollapudi to Gandhi Nagar had to take a time-consuming detour via Bhavanipuram Bus Stand. Some even resorted to climbing the hill to cross over. Recognizing the hardships faced by the public, city commissioner Ajit Singh and Dr. K.L. Rao proposed constructing a tunnel road through the hill.
The Chittinagar tunnel, carved through the hill, was inaugurated on January 4, 1965, and has since become a vital route for the city. Locals highlight its role in saving both time and money for commuters. Before the Kanaka Durga Flyover, this tunnel was the primary link for travelers heading to Hyderabad.
Today, the Chittinagar tunnel is a bustling passageway for residents and tourists alike, located just 20 minutes from the Vijayawada Bus Stand with easy access through local transport. A testament to innovative city planning, the Chittinagar Tunnel continues to serve Vijayawada’s growing population.
