The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday, April 17, issued an ordinance that sub-classifies Scheduled Castes (SCs) for government jobs and education. The move, aimed at addressing internal disparities, divides SCs into three sub-groups with varying reservation quotas.
Under the ordinance (Ordinance No. 2 of 2025), Group 1, consisting of 12 sub-castes like Chandala, Paki, Relli, and Dome, is classified as the most backward, receiving 1% reservation. Group 2, which includes 18 sub-castes such as Chamar, Madiga, and Sindhola, will get 6.5% reservation. Group 3, covering 29 castes from the Mala group (such as Adi Dravida, Mahar, and Mala Dasari), classified as “less backward,” will receive 7.5% reservation.
The ordinance is aimed at providing more targeted benefits within the SC community and ensuring equitable access to government schemes.
