A 2-year-old girl from Narasaraopet, Andhra Pradesh, has died due to bird flu (H5N1), marking the first such fatality in India, triggering nationwide concern.

A central medical team will visit Palnadu district today (April 3) to investigate the case. Experts from Delhi’s National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Mumbai, and AIIMS Mangalagiri will conduct further studies.

Doctors at AIIMS Mangalagiri confirmed that the child was also infected with leptospirosis, possibly due to rat infestations near her home. However, they assured that no other bird flu cases have been reported, and there is no risk of further spread.

The central team’s findings are awaited for more clarity on the cause and potential risks.
