Danger Bells to Kedarnath Pilgrims, Cracks in Joshimath

A new incident of road cracks reported on Badrinath highway near Joshimath of Uttarakhand. Cracks and breaks have been observed on a part of road along the Badrinath Highway near Joshimath. The exact location of recent cracks is in between JP and Marwari.

Chamoli DM Himanshu Khurana confirmed this information with news media outlets. He said that cracks have found near Joshimath on the road from JP to Marwari of Badrinath Highway. Instructions have been given to Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to test the cracks and take necessary protective measures on war foot, Khurana said. He also stated that a few people of Joshimath have complained about cracks in their homes.

An expert team comprises of engineers have been sent to Joshimath to test the cracks on the houses so that the actual situation can be known. Fearing the subsidence again in Joshimath, large number of residents were shifted to safe places where relief centres have been set up.

The Uttarakhand government has already announced relief packages for the affected families of Joshimath. In January this year, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that nearly 3000 families affected by subsidence and the relief package has been released for them.

The Chief Minister Dhami also announced that Rs. 50,000/- has been given by the state disaster authority to each family as a special grant for the transportation of goods and immediate needs of their buildings.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed concern and had assured all help to the state administration over a phone call with CM Dhami.
