New Delhi: Sanjay Verma, a senior Indian diplomat, has cautioned Indian students and their parents about pursuing higher education in Canada, warning of potential pitfalls linked to substandard institutions and bleak job prospects.

In an interview with PTI, Sanjay Verma revealed that some students, despite spending large sums on tuition, face severe disappointment upon finding limited career opportunities, leading to rising cases of student suicides.

Sanjay Verma, who served as India’s High Commissioner to Canada from 2022, urged parents to thoroughly investigate colleges before enrolling their children. He cited instances where two Indian student bodies were sent back weekly due to tragic outcomes, adding, “Parents must avoid enrolling students in unknown colleges, some of which hold classes only once a week.” He pointed out that brokers play a significant role in misleading families, often pushing them toward substandard institutions.

Sanjay Verma highlighted that many Indian students expecting engineering or technical careers end up working as cab drivers or food vendors due to Canada’s limited job market in certain fields. Additionally, he cautioned students about the influence of Khalistani and separatist elements in Canada who attempt to manipulate young minds using financial aid or food as incentives.

This advisory comes amid recent diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, prompting Sanjay Verma’s return to India.
