Hyderabad: The Telangana government, under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has made Telugu a compulsory subject for Classes 1 to 10 in all schools across the state. The rule applies to institutions under CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other boards, starting from the 2025-26 academic year.

This move comes amid debates over the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which Tamil Nadu has opposed for allegedly promoting Hindi imposition. However, the Congress-led Telangana government has chosen to fully enforce the Telangana Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools Act, 2018, which was introduced by the previous BRS government but not effectively implemented.

CM Revanth Reddy has held meetings with school managements to ensure the rule’s smooth implementation. He has also approved the textbook “Vennela” to help non-Telugu-speaking students learn the language with ease.

With this decision, Telangana aims to preserve its linguistic heritage and promote Telugu learning across all educational institutions in the state.
