Prayagraj: A stampede-like situation at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj has led to multiple casualties, with exact figures yet to be confirmed. The incident occurred around 2 AM at the Sangam Nose, where the Ganga and Yamuna rivers meet, as millions of devotees gathered for the sacred Mauni Amavasya Snan.

UP Govt’s Response & Security Measures

Authorities, including the Chief Secretary and DGP, have been deployed to assess the situation. A Rapid Action Force team has been stationed at the site to prevent further mishaps. Several Akharas have also called off their holy dip in light of safety concerns.
Political Reactions & Criticism
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly contacted CM Yogi Adityanath multiple times to monitor the situation. Meanwhile, opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, criticized the BJP-led UP government, citing “poor planning and VIP culture” as reasons behind the tragedy.
Current Status & Crowd Control
With over 10 crore devotees expected today, security remains a top priority. The UP government has implemented no-vehicle zones, restricted VIP protocols, and regulated entry for Akharas.
